"Students are given a wide range of responsibilities... and these enable them to develop into self-confident and motivated young people"

Ofsted 2008

Swanlea has been successful in being gaining the Established Quality in Extended Services award. We at Swanlea believe that learning not only takes place in the classroom in curriculum time but also out of hours - at lunchtimes, after school and in the holidays. So we at Swanlea provide a rich and varied menu of activities out of hours to complement and add to the curriculum.

Swanlea runs many different out of hours activities. These include sports activities both after school and at weekends, and in the summer we run a summer scheme which includes sports activities. We have very talented footballers in our midst and dance teachers have run sessions from bollywood to streetdance to classical Indian dance in and out of school time. Our drama clubs range from working on a primary school tour of our Year 10 work, to taking part in the national Shakespeare in Schools tour for which we have produced a bilingual version of Macbeth and a modern interpretation of Romeo and Juliet.

We run after hours study support sessions every night of the week, plus Saturdays, half terms and Easter and summer holidays. These range from coursework sessions for all areas of the curriculum in both Year 9 and Year 10 and 11 plus homework clubs for both KS3 and KS4 in all subjects. Languages clubs are run regularly, as well as a partnership with the Arsenal Football Club and our Science department.

Initiatives for out of hours clubs come from students themselves who run lunchtime clubs with the support of the Swanlea Youth Project – see Youth Work. Teachers can also set up their own clubs, both curriculum and interest and interest based. We receive funding for all these activities not only from the School budget but also the Jack Petchey Foundation as well as other sources of funding which are applied for when necessary.

Swanlea employs several youth workers; all work part time. They are supervised by a Senior Youth Worker. Together they form the Swanlea Youth Project which has run successful youth work activities for several years. They support students with initiating and running lunch time clubs which range from art, drama, computer to sports activities. They run our successful Saturday football sessions in competition with other schools in the borough and we have been champions more than once. In the summer, with funds from charities as well as the London Borough of Tower Hamlets the Youth Project runs two week long schemes with Healthy Eating as their theme, providing information on how to keep fit and healthy.
